'idea di solennizzare in modo particolare il Grande Giubileo della
Chiesa romana, è stata raccolta dall'Ordine di Malta che, oltre a garantire il servizio sanitario nelle quattro Basiliche romane, ha sollecitato tutte le sue emanazioni nel mondo a svolgere programmi in adesione allo spirito delle parole del Santo Padre, più volte manifestate alle comunità dei credenti.
In questo quadro, la Fondazione Melitense “Donna Maria Marullo di Condojanni” ha voluto farsi, in adesione ai suoi fini istituzionali, promotrice di un programma melitense per gli organismi dell’Ordine operanti in Sicilia.
Ha avuto la stretta collaborazione dell’Associazione dei Cavalieri Italiani, del CISOM ed, in particolare, della Delega-zione Granpriorale di Messina e delle altre Delegazioni siciliane. Grande onore ha reso all’Ordine la Regione Sicilia, la quale ha voluto sostenere l’organizzazione di un grande Convegno, dal titolo: “La Presenza dei Cavalieri di San Giovanni in Sicilia”, tenutosi in due sessioni, a Palazzo dei Normanni a Palermo ed a Palazzo Zanca a Messina.
Concreta testimonianza dell’interesse che l’Ordine ha risvegliato nel mondo, sempre più desideroso di recuperare la memoria che in molti casi le vicende del passato avevano consacrata all’oblio.
Questo volume di sintesi, se da una parte onora la storia e produce ricerche sul passato, ha anche il compito di registrare fatti contemporanei, che costituiranno la memoria del futuro, consentendo, a coloro che oltre il secondo millennio cristiano si occuperanno dei Cavalieri di Malta, di trovare fonti importanti e riferimenti temporali e spaziali. Certi di tale impegno ne diamo atto alla Fondazione che con lo sforzo di questa pubblicazione si inserisce a pieno titolo nelle iniziative editoriali melitensi contemporanee. Così come ad essa si deve ascrivere il merito del moltiplicarsi di iniziative melitensi non solo nella Città, che fu sede del Gran Priorato, dove oggi il Sovrano Ordine assiste e cura i barboni, gli zingari, e si prodiga per alleviare le sofferenze dei più fragili, ma anche nelle altre sedi dell’Isola dove, attraverso l’intervento di diversi Enti Melitensi, in concorso fra loro, si è creata un’importante base di protezione civile, con sede nel territorio di Caltanissetta, dove numerose ambulanze e mezzi di soccorso sono a disposizione in caso di calamità e normalmente prestano servizio nelle città di Palermo, Catania, Messina, Ragusa.
Vogliano la Santa Vergine del Monte Fileremo e il Santo Patron San Giovanni Battista assicurare la loro protezione a tutte le iniziative dell’Ordine nel mondo che, nel solco del grande Giubileo della Chiesa, sono sorte e si sono ravvivate in tutti i continenti.

he Order of Malta celebrated in a special way the Grand Jubilee of the Roman Church by not only guaranteeing a medical service in the four Roman Basilicas, but also by prompting its associations worldwide to implement programmes in harmony with the spirit of the Holy Father’s words uttered to the community of the faithful.
Within this framework the “Donna Maria Marullo di Condojanni” Foun-dation wanted, in line with its institutional aims, to promote a programme for the Order’s bodies operating in Sicily.
It had the close cooperation of the Italian Knights Association, of CISOM and in particular of the Grand Priory Messina Delegation and other Sicilian Dele-gations.
The Sicilian Region rendered significant honour to the Order when it supported the organisation of an important conference entitled “The Presence of the Knights of St. John in Sicily”, held in two sessions, in the Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo and in Palazzo Zanca in Messina.
The testifies to the interest the Order has aroused worldwide, increasingly desirous to revive the memory that the events of the past have so often assigned to oblivion. This book of abstracts not only honours history and produces research into the past but also has the task of recording contemporary facts that will constitute the memory of the future.
This will enable those who will be dealing with the Knights of Malta beyond the Christian second millennium to find important sources and certain temporal and spatial references. Certain of this commitment, we are grateful to the Foundation which, with this publication, has taken an active part in the Order of Malta’s contemporary editorial initiatives. Just as it has promoted the many initiatives not only in the city that was the headquarters of the Grand Priory, where the Sovereign Order now assists and treats the homeless and gypsies and does all it can to alleviate the suffering of the frailest, but also in its other centres on the island. The Order’s different bodies have also joined forces to establish an important civil defence base in Sicily with headquarters in the Caltanissetta area. This base has numerous ambulances ad rescue means on call in the event of calamities and which normally offer their services in the cities of Palermo, Catania, Messina and Ragusa.
May the Holy Virgin of Mount Phileremus and its Patron St. John the Baptist ensure their protection to this and to all the Order’s initiatives in the world which, on the occasion of the great Jubilee of the Church, have been launched and renewed on all continents.
