University of Palermo on "Memorie e Civiltŕ Gerosolimitane" with
great anticipation. The initiative falls within the framework of the Accademia
Internazionale Melitense's efforts to promote the history of the Hierosolymitan
Institution, and especially that of its Grand Priories, on an international
level. The endeavour to document the contemporary activities of the Order, to
help the task of future historians, is also part of this plan. The aim is to
ensure that they do not experience the great gaps that scholars are currently
encountering for the period running between the loss of Malta and the Order's
resurgence during the first part of the last century. The titles of the papers I will have the honour of listening to already
give an idea of the level of the contributions: Henri Bresc, Maria Concetta Di
Natale, Paolo Papanti-Pellettier and Pino Zingale, will talk about the presence
of the Knights of St. John in Sicily, their relations with the local society
and the testimonies they left in its art, the development of the Order's legal
system after the Chapter General of 1997 and the importance of the Italian
presence through its Knights' Associations in the territories of the Grand
Priories of Lombardy and Venice, Rome, Naples and Sicily; not only a historical
presence, therefore, but also an active contemporary one. In applauding once again the initiative of the University of Palermo,
let us hope that the seeds sown today
in the fertile earth of research can grow to further strengthen the bonds
between the land of Sicily, the land of Malta and the Order of St. John. Palermo. Palazzo dei Normanni. Il Gran Cancelliere firma il libro d’onore a
