4. Brief Description of Project
The living situation and the health status of women and children in rural areas of Kanyakumari district/South India need to be urgently improved. Therefore Bishop Lawrence Mar Ephraem (Archdiocese Trivandrum, Diocese Marthandom) has been implementing since 1993 in close co-operation with Malteser-Hilfsdienst, Germany, a community basic health programme, called HOM (Health for One Million) in Kanyakumari District/South India.
The main objective of the programme is to evolve a self-sustained system of continuing education on topics of Health and Development benefiting all people and particularly the weaker sections. In more detail the objectives are:
• to organise women in self-help groups;
• to educate women on health and development;
• to improve the quality of life for women through income-generating activities.
The following activities will be implemented during project period 1.1.1999 - 31.12.1999:
• health and nutrition education;
• medical treatment of mothers and children in mobile units (OPDs);
• rehabilitation of disabled children and prevention;
• natural family planning;
• income generating activities.
